Most of us buy grout to patch up small holes in our home, which means we usually have plenty of the powder leftover when we’re done with the job. But did you know you can use that to create amazing DIY chalkboard paint?

While visiting Rachael Ray, John Gidding admits that he’s not allowed to spill the “trade secret” of how chalkboard paint manufacturers actually create their own formulas, but he does spill the beans on his own method.

As soon as she hears what their project at hand is, Rachael can’t contain her excitement as a huge fan of the unique paint. She even admits to having an entire wall covered with it by her desk to use while working on her recipes!

It’s definitely become one of the most popular DIY materials over the past few years with folks using chalkboard paint to spruce up boring doors or create handy cheese platters. Of course, the sky is the limit when it comes to where you might use it in your own home.

Heck, with this incredibly simple hack, you might be tempted to paint over every surface you have! You can even create other colors with whatever paint you have on hand, but I do love how this classic black version looks when Rachael and John finish the section of the wall behind them.

John’s genius method is also a great way to make use of leftover crafting and home improvement products that would otherwise just gather dust and go bad.

Take a look to see the measurements and how well the paint holds up to chalk.
